The Norwich Breed
Is the Norwich Terrier a good match for you?
Energy- energetic, needs daily exercise, playful. They were bred to hunt and have those instincts to chase small prey. Although they are good with other household pets, caution should be taken with small animals. They can not be trusted off leash because of their strong desire to hunt. A fenced yard or leash is necessary to keep them safe.
Grooming- they have a double coat, with the outer coat being a hard coat, and minimal shedding. They should be stripped which is pulling the dead hair out, and have a natural short coat.
Color- Norwich come in all shades of red, grizzle, or black & tan. For examples and more information click here. Brindle is not an approved color, be aware of the puppies being sold on the internet that appear like a brindle Cairn.
Trainability- highly intelligent and easy to train. They require consistent rules.
Children- good with children, they love everyone
Personality- happy, fearless, playful and less quarrelsome than other Terriers
Health- the Norwich Terrier is generally a healthy breed. All dog breeds have inherent health problems, and it is important to purchase a puppy from a breeder who is knowledgeable and breeds to reduce the chances of health disorders in their dogs and puppies. The Norwich is prone to vaccination reactions so precautions should be taken such as watching for signs and symptoms and medicating with Benadryl prior to vaccinating.
Why are Norwich so expensive? There are few numbers and a high demand. Norwich have small litters and can have higher incidence of complications, making them difficult to breed. Waiting lists may be long with reputable breeders. Fraudulent sellers have taken Cairn Terriers, cropped their tail, and sold them online as Norwich for the inflated prices. Quality Norwich are $2500-4000 for pets. Ensure you are purchasing DNA verified AKC puppies from a reputable breeder. Reputable breeders sell AKC pets with limited registration to forever pet homes.
